Stand-up comedy at Hogs Breath Saloon Key West

When I tell anyone that Sean does stand-up the response is always the same – O god I would never do that it sounds so scary. Never having had children I get to experience first hand what sending off a kid to his first day of school feels like. Last year, when he did his first show, I sat in the audience terrified for him.

The show is the demonic brainchild of Tom “the bicycling comedian” Snyders  who has logged 150,000+ miles around the world on his bicycle. That’s 150K honest miles and he has the footage to prove it. A German named Bruno is out there somewhere claiming to have biked more miles but his records are likely fudged and rumor has it that Tom is about to challenge him to a smackdown – but that’s a story for another post.

The comedians were Tom, Les, QMitch, Kelly, Evan, Allison, Les, Sean. Admission was $5 – or about 70cents a head. The venue was upstairs at the famous Hogs Breath Saloon and it was a great room.

Two of this year’s crop had never before attempted this art form. Les, a first-timer went first.

Les is naturally adorable and that helps a lot but he was really good on stage – did not appear at all nervous.

Tom put this group together through a class he gives. This is his second year teaching to these brave and foolish souls and from the look of his sign-up sheet there should be many more willing to try their hand at it next year.

Kelly has a radio show on KONK AM and is part of the groups alumni. She was there last year with a similar relationship lament. She wore classic comedic black. Click on her image for her “Bubba Girl Talk” radio show schedule.

This is really tough. Check out the stage and imagine what it must be like – there’s nothing to hold on to. No band, no group- just you and the mike and a horrible spotlight. I think the only merciful part is that the light blinds you to most of the audience.

Do they wish you well? Have they drank enough?

QMitch is the bingo caller at the 801 and he was the triple threat! He won first prize for bringing the most friends, another for his first time out and a third for being really funny.

The tag team of Evan and Allison came next. No, they didn’t appear together but their act played off each other. They are both members of The Improvables and each have great timing and body language.

Evan is a cop in Key West so he has enough material to last him well into his twilight years.

Allison has a fabulous dysfunctional family with great humor. And she works at the library – where did she go wrong?

Here she is consoling her mom after the show.

Finally, the moment of truth – Sean appears.

ONO not Aqua Velva man!

This year my friend Janet had to nudge me to take a picture of him on stage. I had that deer in the headlight feeling. But Sean killed it, he really did.

The audience was appreciative.

The upstairs room at Hogs Breath was full.

Even dignitaries were spotted. Here’s Sir Peter of the Conch Republic speaking with Sean.

Gorgeous galz! Here’s three fabu blondes!

If you think you have what it takes to risk making a complete fool of yourself, go ahead and sign up.

I dare you!
