Fantastic Fauna of Key West

This afternoon I got a call from my friend Danny who found one of these in his yard.

He knew what it was right away. A box turtle! I suggested that he call KW Wildlife and ask them what to do.

Many sites are useful and informative describing the peculiarities of this charming land turtle.  They are actually indigenous to our area. The folks at the wildlife center told him to leave it alone and let him go about his business unimpeded so that’s what Danny did right after taking his picture.

Here are some more amazing critters that I have spotted lately.

We saw these pelicans after taking a boat out – also with Danny! He is just a critter magnet!  Here’s another pelican.

Speaking of cuteness. This little guy (who is probably full grown) was hanging out in the parking lot in Big Pine Key when we pulled in. He was very sure of himself, relishing his status as a protected species.

He was licking the gravel. Was he after the salt?

Here’s a profile view. Take a look at Mr Adorable’s tender hooves! OMG! – the gimlet eye!

I saw this Ibis not so long ago – last week at the KW botanical gardens.

Then these two – caught in the act!

Bye from the house bunny.
