A little over a year ago, The Casa Marina Writer’s Group was formed and we have been going strong ever since. We have six members total and four of us write crime fiction.
But in completely different ways.
Mike Dennis has three books out and a collection of short stories. He writes Noir – as characterized by an ordinary joe caught up in extraordinary circumstances. Someone who always chooses the wrong thing when given options. Amoral, searching for salvation in the one perfect score – characters who will go anywhere but to their own better judgment.
Michael Haskins writes political murder mystery that generally takes place on the streets of Key West. His works are plot based, detailed. Locals and others will recognize scenes and characters typical of this town and a laid back, con leche loving, fish sandwich eating hero, figuring out whodunnit in the colorful bars, marinas and back alleys of this free-wheeling town.
Jonathan Woods has a book of short stories – a wild ride of dark deeds and wicked humor in situations that would be improbable if written by a less nimble hand. He bends language to his own nefarious devices – literary trailer trash and treasonous hearts make his short story collection a gut-wrenching wallop to the brain.
As for me, hmmm – imagine a serial killer obsessed suburbanite who uses garden gloves in extraordinary ways. Or a roommate who wants a perfect friendship to stay that way forever, no matter what she has to do to keep it from slipping away. Mine is a collection of short stories only calm on the surface.
Please join us at The Cork & Stogie, 1218 Duval St, for Crime Night and hear a weird selection of very different voices. Wednesday, November 9, beginning at 7:30 PM. and enjoy a very special evening of fine wines, mellow cigars and blood-curdling prose.
