She is so popular that she fills two back-to-back\u00a0 day long classes at The Studios Key West.\u00a0 Her style is easygoing and informative. She began by giving us a brief overview of the batik process. <a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2032.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2664\" title=\"IMGP2032\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2032-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Batik is surprisingly easy to do with a good element of instant gratification. We use cold water dyes . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wbtatter.com\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2665\" title=\"IMGP2036\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2036-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Other simple tools like brushes, bins, wax, iron and unprinted newsprint. At the end of this post, I&#8217;ll provide Wendy&#8217;s suggested list of supplies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2037.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2666\" title=\"IMGP2037\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2037-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Within a few minutes of setting up we engrossed in the work. If you have worked in watercolor you will find this part of the process familiar. You need a good drawing on 100% cotton.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP20351.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2694\" title=\"IMGP2035\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP20351-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP20382.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2695\" title=\"IMGP2038\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP20382-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Wendy was involved throughout &#8211; this was a class that produced, learning as we went along.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2061.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2702\" title=\"IMGP2061\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2061-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next we heat the wax (75% paraffin 25% beeswax) in an electric skillet until it reaches\u00a0 250 degrees.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2070.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2670\" title=\"IMGP2070\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2070-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Apply wax wherever you want to save the white &#8211; generally where the light hits.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2046.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2667\" title=\"IMGP2046\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2046-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2052.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2698\" title=\"IMGP2052\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2052-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP20531.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2699\" title=\"IMGP2053\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP20531-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Then apply the first color.<\/p>\n<p>My batik began with three fish.\u00a0 I waxed the fins to keep them transparent then applied the first color\u00a0 yellow\/gold.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2051.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2673\" title=\"IMGP2051\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2051-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Look what I did!&#8221; Something about making a big mess is freeing &#8211; brings out the inner happy kid. This piece is being held upside down to prevent the sky from bleeding into the house.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2050.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2690\" title=\"IMGP2050\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2050-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After applying the first color the piece is hung out to dry.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2057.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2674\" title=\"IMGP2057\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2057-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then the next color is added . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2062.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2675\" title=\"IMGP2062\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2062-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>keep building color. . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2076.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2701\" title=\"IMGP2076\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2076-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and hang out to dry after each addition, always waxing over areas we want to keep.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP20591.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2703\" title=\"IMGP2059\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP20591-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>If you look closely, you can see the wax covering the entire design to save it from . . . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2075.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2704\" title=\"IMGP2075\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2075-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>the dye bath!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2055.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2705\" title=\"IMGP2055\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2055-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then back out to dry again.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2082.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2706\" title=\"IMGP2082\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2082-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>My fish look somewhat abstract &#8211; I wonder why?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2064.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2676\" title=\"IMGP2064\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2064-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>More work, still covered in wax but otherwise complete.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP20841.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2714\" title=\"IMGP2084\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP20841-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2063.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2734\" title=\"IMGP2063\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2063-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP20731.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2717\" title=\"IMGP2073\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP20731-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>After the final color is on and dry, we place the piece between two sheets of newsprint, set the iron on high and dry and press until the paper becomes saturated with wax.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2067.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2718\" title=\"IMGP2067\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2067-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Keep going, discarding paper\u00a0 . .<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2066.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2719\" title=\"IMGP2066\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP2066-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a> until the paper is dry. More wax will come off in the fullness of time &#8211; but 90something percent is good enough for me.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP20721.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2723\" title=\"IMGP2072\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/IMGP20721-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>We all produced at least two good pieces of batik. It is something I will definitely do again &#8211;\u00a0 much easier than I thought it would be.
