They are done in Cubist Moderne style with Basquiat inspired open mouths and blank eyes.\u00a0 The nose and hovering breast pay homage to Picasso.<\/p>\n<p>The order in which the images are encountered is interesting. First we  meet them in their least recognizable but most expressive depiction.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0647.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2142\" title=\"IMG_0647\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0647-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These portraits hang on both sides of the upstairs hallway of the Studios. Click on the image to go to The Studios Key West website.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tskw.org\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2141\" title=\"IMG_0646\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0646-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Out of the corner of my eye, I notice that the sides of all paintings have been colored red.\u00a0 Michael chose the color deliberately, inspired by the red soles of Louboutin shoes &#8211; also seen as a glimpse, an afterthought. These  unmistakable icons of femininity, status, and power,\u00a0 give the illusion that the red carpet has rubbed off on the soles &#8211; like fairy dust.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Christian-Louboutin-shoes-Declic1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-2145\" title=\"Christian-Louboutin-shoes-Declic\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Christian-Louboutin-shoes-Declic1-150x150.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Speaking of red, judging from the red dots, I estimate that 80% have been purchased, likely by the subject or family of the work.<\/p>\n<p>Michael balks at the suggestion that these are &#8220;vanity&#8221; portraits instead he prefers to see the portraits as homage to the patron saints of of Key West- women who contribute time energy and resources to the community. Michael speaks of his subjects with deep affection and cautions that &#8220;to whom much is given, much is required&#8221;.\u00a0 He views his paintings as his way of honoring them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0642.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2156\" title=\"IMG_0642\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0642-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the front wall is the figure that inspired the exhibition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0649.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-2157\" title=\"IMG_0649\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0649-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>And the inscription.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0650.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2158\" title=\"IMG_0650\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0650-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Around the corner, we come upon a bank of photographs of these same women done in recognizable style.\u00a0 Traditionally pretty, yet they remain distant and iconic figures.<\/p>\n<p>This is a view from a fan &#8211; less accessible, lost in time (black &amp; white)   signed like something mailed to a stranger or seen on the wall of an Italian restaurant.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_06581.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2159\" title=\"IMG_0658\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_06581-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, facing on the wall opposite the black &amp; white photographs a commercial and glossy montage of these same women;\u00a0 a modern collage suitable for a magazine or\u00a0 advertorial.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_06511.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2162\" title=\"IMG_0651\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_06511-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although sleek, this rendition depicts a present tense accessible view  of these women in familiar surroundings  with the trappings of  domestica.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0652.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-thumbnail wp-image-2163\" title=\"IMG_0652\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0652-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0653.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2164\" title=\"IMG_0653\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0653-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Depicting the women three ways provides context, perspective, depth.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0644.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2125\" title=\"IMG_0644\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0644-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0662.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-2135\" title=\"IMG_0662\" src=\"https:\/\/argyle.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/IMG_0662-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a>Take the time to see these remarkable images and see if you recognize any of them.
